01 · 砂鉄
Iron Sand
The journey begins in the riverbeds of Miyazaki, where iron-rich sand is gathered — a practice unchanged for a thousand years.
02 · 製錬
Smelting
In the traditional tatara furnace, impurities float away and pure steel — tamahagane — remains.
03 · 鍛造
Forging
The smith heats the steel to a glowing orange, then strikes. Each hammer blow compresses the metal's grain structure, building strength.
04 · 焼き入れ
Quenching
At precisely the right temperature, the blade plunges into the pure water of a Miyazaki mountain stream. This moment defines the edge.
05 · 研磨
Polishing
Eight stages of whetstone, from rough to mirror-finish. This is where sharpness is born.
06 · 銘切り
Signature
The final act. The smith inscribes their name into the blade — a promise made visible in steel.
