Step Inside the Forge

From Earth
to Blade

How a thousand-year tradition turns iron into a blade.

The Journey of Steel

Six transformations from raw earth to finished blade

01 ยท ็ ‚้‰„

Iron Sand

The journey begins in the riverbeds of Miyazaki, where iron-rich sand is gathered โ€” a practice unchanged for a thousand years.

02 ยท ่ฃฝ้Œฌ

Smelting

In the traditional tatara furnace, impurities float away and pure steel โ€” tamahagane โ€” remains.

03 ยท ้›้€

Forging

The smith heats the steel to a glowing orange, then strikes. Each hammer blow compresses the metal's grain structure, building strength.

04 ยท ็„ผใๅ…ฅใ‚Œ

Quenching

At precisely the right temperature, the blade plunges into the pure water of a Miyazaki mountain stream. This moment defines the edge.

05 ยท ็ ”็ฃจ

Polishing

Eight stages of whetstone, from rough to mirror-finish. This is where sharpness is born.

06 ยท ้Š˜ๅˆ‡ใ‚Š

Signature

The final act. The smith inscribes their name into the blade โ€” a promise made visible in steel.
